Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve filling efficiency with automatic performance of periods for opening and closing propen air intake and exhaust valves by using each cam in changeover corresponding to the drive condition by providing low and high speed cams on a cam shaft to open and close air intake and exhaust valves in an internal combustion engine.
CONSTITUTION: Air intake and exhaust valves (unshown in the figure) are brought in contact with one end of a rocker arm 19 axially supported by a rocker axle 21, while the other end of the arm 19 is brought in contact with a cam 27 formed on a cam shaft 29. A hydraulic cylinder 33 is connected to the rocker axle 21 that is moved corresponding to oil pressure. Low and high speed cam profiles 27a, 27b are closely positioned on the cam shaft 29, an inclined surface 27b' is formed at the top of the high speed cam 27b. Further, the arm surface which is brought in contact with the cam 27 has a rocker rod 19b fixed which has an inclined surface 19b' likewise, which facilitates to connect and disconnect the rod 19b to the both cams 27a, 27b.
