Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase fresh air charging efficiency in a low-speed operational range of an engine, by changing the valve opening timing of the intake and exhaust valves in said operational range to relatively increase exhaust-gas energy imparted to a turbocharger.
CONSTITUTION: When engine speed becomes lower than a predetermined speed, pressure P in the intake passage acted to a diaphragm means 22 is lowered. Resultantly, a diaphragm 23 of the diaphragm means 22 is moved to the right by a return spring 26, so that a limit switch 25 is turned OFF by a rod 24. This causes a three- way solenoid valve 18 to open an air cylinder 16 to the atmosphere. Therefore, a piston rod 17 is retracted by a spring 20 and a rocker shaft 12 is turned, by an arm 15, to a position shown by the solid line in the drawing. In this state, an eccentric boss portion 13 of a shaft 12, which is formed integrally with the shaft 12, is displaced from an upper position A to a lower position B to increase the lift and the valve opening time of an exhaust valve 10 as compared with those of valve 10 in a high-speed operational range of the engine.
