PURPOSE:To eliminate blooming and smear of an image pickup device by disposing the second control gate adjacent to a horizontal reader and further disposing a charge absorber adjacent thereto. CONSTITUTION:This device is composed of a photosensitive unit 10 disposed in matrix shape, vertical reading lines 11, vertical shift resigters 12 sequentially selecting the lines of the photosensitive unit array, the first control gate 13 for transferring the signal charge transferred to the respective vertical reading lines to a charge transfer unit 14 for reading in parallel the signal charges, a signal detector 15 provided at one end of the charge transfer unit 14, the second control gate 24 adjacent to the charge transfer unit 14, and charge absorber 25 for forming P-N junction with the substrate semiconductor.
