CONSTITUTION:The time division number can be increased as the product of the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn of a liquid crystal and the thickness (d) of a liquid crystal layer is decreased. However, the optical rotatory power is lost at <=0.4mum time division number, and the quality of display is not secured. The larger the difference between the twist angle beta of the liquid crystal molecule and the twist angle alpha of the absorbing axes of the upper and the lower polarizing plates the more the time division properties can be increased. However, an evil effect is caused by the interference effect of the double refraction light. In this connection a <=20 deg.C angle is ideal for the difference between the angles beta and alpha. When the display electrodes are distributed so as to occupy the greater part of a display area, the greater part of a display screen is divided into a glow part and a nonglow part with no existence of a backgound part. Thus the nonglow part is regarded as a background to reduce the effect of crosstalk.
