Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a projected image having high quality by forming liquid crystal cell substrates so as to satisfy prescribed stretching conditions, forming a pair of polarizers to the state in which the axes are shifted by 90 deg. and impressing a voltage on the information non-display part of the liquid crystal cell to make reversal display. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal molecules 9 between the substrates 4 and 7 are twisted to the structure in which the twist angle alpha thereof is 180-250 deg.C. The angle between the orientation direction of the liquid crystal molecules 9 in contact with the upper and lower substrates 4, 7 and the transmission or absorption axis of the polarizers 13, 14 disposed in proximity to the substrates 4, 7 is set at 30-60 deg.. The product d.DELTAn of the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn of the liquid crystal molecules 9 at ordinary temp. and the thickness (d) of the liquid crystal layer 11 is so set as to satisfy the relation -0.0023alpha+1.2<=d.Dn<=0.0023alpha+1.5. The polarizers 13, 14 are constituted by disposing the one polarizer 13 with a 90 deg. deviation from the transmission or absorption axis of the other polarizer 14. The display having less unequal colors on the ground is thereby obtd.
