Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the durability and safety of the titled device, to simplify the structure thereof and to reduce cost by a method wherein a terminal and an electrode which are capable of generating an electric spark and arranged opposite to each other on the upstream side end of a trapper for collecting the fine exhaust gas particles. CONSTITUTION:A spark plug 9 comprising an anode terminal 21 and a cathode electrode 22 is provided on the upstream side end of a trapper 15 in a trapper casing 11 provided in an exhaust gas pipe 20. When the fine exhaust gas particles from an engine is collected in the trapper vessel 11, the rise of the back pressure on the upstream side of the vessel 11 is detected by a back pressure sensor 7 in proportion to the accumulating condition of the fine exhaust gas particles and the detected value is converted into an information signal regarding the collection of the fine particles through an electronic computor (not shown). Then, when a spark is generated between the terminal 21 and the electrode 22, the fine particles accumulated in concave sections 13 of the vessel 11 are burned and the resultant combustion flames transfer into the trapper to burn almost all the fine particles, to thereby enable the trapper 15 to be regenerated.
