Abstract

PURPOSE:To heighten the efficiency of collection of particles in exhaust gas, by electrifying the particles in exhaust gas and then using one of parallel-installed filters to remove the particles from the exhaust gas and by conducting the exhaust gas to the other filter when one filter has become clogged and by applying electric heating to regenerate the clogged filter. CONSTITUTION:The particles in the exhaust gas of an engine 1 are electrified by a high-voltage charger in the manifold so that the particles cohere to each other and their property of clinging to filters 21, 22 is heightened. The exhaust gas is then conducted through one of exhaust pipes 5, 6 provided with a change- over valve 4, so that the particles are collected by one filter 21 or 22 and the exhaust gas is then released through a pipe 8. When the filter has become clogged, a controller 13 shifts the valve 4 depending on a detection signal S1 or S2 to conduct the exhaust gas to the other filter. A valve 9 or 10 is opened to supply secondary air to the filter clogged with the particles, which are burned by an electric heater 29 or 30 to regenerate the filter.
