Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the thermal efficiency of an internal combustion engine, by providing a water reservoir around the combustion chamber of the engine and providing a turbine which is rotated by superheated steam from a steam heating chamber provided around the exhaust pipe, to efficiently recover thermal energy. CONSTITUTION:A water reservoir 10 is provided around the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine to generate steam. The steam is conducted to a steam heating chamber 16 provided on the high-temperature part of the exhaust pipe 18, so that the steam is superheated. The superheated steam rotates a turbine 22 and is changed into water by a condenser 26. The rotary shafts of the turbine 22 and the engine are connected to each other through a motive power transmission mechanism to add the torque of the turbine to that of the engine. Thermal energy is thus efficiently recovered to heighten the total output of the engine.
