Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficientry remove metallic components from an aqueous solution containing a hexavalent chromium compound and a nickel and/or zinc compound, by adding diammonium sulfite to the aqueous solution, reducing the solution under an acidic condition, and then neutralizing it.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing a hexavalent chromium compound and a nickel and/or zinc compound is adjusted at pH 1.0W3.0 by addition of sulfuric acid or the like. To this acidified solution is then added a 5W10wt% aqueous diammonium sulfite solution as a reducing agent to convert the hexavalent chromium compound into a trivalent one. Thereafter, the aqueous solution is adjusted at pH 8W12 by addition of a neutralizer such as sodium hydroxide. The precipitated metal hydroxides are filtered and removed from the solution. The addition of the diammonium sulfite solution is continued until oxidation- reduction potential reaches the lowest level. Its addition amount is 1.0W2.0 equivalent per part of the chromium component in general.
