Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the efficiency of recovering iron and Cr by dissolving mixed sludge of hydroxides of a plurality of valuable metals and iron hydroxide in an acid; adjusting the soln. to a specified pH range; and dissolving coprecipitated valuable metals other than iron and Cr hydroxides in an acid.
CONSTITUTION: An acid such as sulfuric acid is added to mixed sludge of hydroxides of valuable metals such as Cr, Cu, Zn and Ni and iron hydroxide to dissolve all of the metals, e.g. at pH=1. At this time, it is required that an oxidizing agent such as NaClO is added during the dissolution to convert divalent iron into trivalent iron. An alkali such as NH3 is added to the soln. to adjust the soln. to a pH value above a Cr hydroxide forming pH range and in a divalent metal hydroxide forming min. pH range, e.g. pH 5.2, thereby precipitating iron and Cr as hydroxides. An acid such as dil. sulfuric acid is then added to the precipitates to adjust the soln., e.g. to pH 3.7 and dissolve other valuable metals coprecipitated with iron and Cr. Thus, iron, Cr and other valuable metals are efficiently separated and recovered.
