Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover selenium without loss and eliminate interruption of selenium with recovery of copper, by adding a mercaptan to a decoppering liquid of an anode slime from copper electrolysis and then precipitating and removing selenium present in the liquid.
CONSTITUTION: When subjecting an anode slime of copper electrolysis to a decoppering treatment in which the slime is suspended in an electrolyte and then oxidized by heating by the addition of air or a ferric salt, selenium is eluted together with copper in the treatment liquid. Then, a mercaptan, e.g., methylmercaptan, thiomalic acid, etc., is added to the treatment liquid to reduce selenium compounds present to elemental selenium which is, in turn, precipitated and removed. Then, the treatment liquid deprived of selenium is again sent to a copper electrolytic process or used in the recovery of copper sulfate, etc. If selenium-containing treatment liquid is reused in electrolysis, the electrolysis of copper is interrupted and also recovered product is polluted. Also, the removal of selenium prevents an adverse effect on the recovery of valuable metals, e.g., Au, Ag, etc., from the anode slime.
