Abstract

PURPOSE: To decompose NOX in an exhaust gas into N2 and O2 without adding an extraneous oxidizing or reducing agent, by contacting the exhaust gas with a catalyst containing a composite oxide of barium and cobalt as an active component at a specific temp.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst is prepared by a conventional method such as coprecipitation from an aqueous solution or kneading by using oxides, hydroxides, chlorides, carbonates or nitrates of barium and cobalt as stock materials so as to adjust Ba/Co (atomic ratio) in a range of 0.1W10.0 in a composition after baking and baked at 600W1,400°C. A NOX containing exhaust gas is contacted with the obtained catalyst at 600W1,000°C to decompose NOX in the exhaust gas into N2 and O2.
