Abstract

PURPOSE: To render nitrogen oxides (NOX) contained in the exhaust gas harmless by effective and economical reduction by means of catalyst adapted to reduce thereof in contact with ammonia as reducing agent.
CONSTITUTION: In production of a catalyst [TiO2]a[WO3]b[V2O5]c(b/c=2W5, (b+c)/a=0.03W0.12) which is supported by a tiO2 less in V2O5 and more in WO3, the TiO and 0.05W0.3% by weight of V2O5 (or a substance convertible to V2O5 following baking) are mixed and formed. The mixture is immersed into a alkaline solution containing tungsten and baked. Acordingly, the catalyst thus produced works effectively little affected by sulfur oxides and soot acting as catalytic poison. It is possible to reduce the amount of tungsten used without deterioration of catalytic performance to control the oxidation from SO2 to SO3 thereby simplifying the production process and lowering the price. The catalyst thus obtained can render NOX harmless by an effective reduction.
