Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture sheet glass having ≤1mm uniform thickness when sheet glass is manufactured by feeding molten glass onto molten metal, by providing a specified shape to the lower end of a weir member set on the surface of the molten metal.
CONSTITUTION: Molten glass 5 is poured onto a molten metallic bath 8 in an apparatus for manufacturing sheet glass to form a molten glass pool 15 with a weir member 14 set on the bath 8. The member 14 is made of refractory 4 having a low wetting property to molten glass such as boron nitride or graphite, and a shape included in the curve range represented by equationIis provided to the lower end 4A. Molten glass is drawn from the gap between the member 14 and the bath 8 to form sheet glass 23. By controlling the flow rate of molten glass at the lower face of the central region of the member 14, the flow rate of molten glass is made uniform in the whole gap between the face of the member 14 in a direction perpendicular to the drawing direction of the glass and the surface of the bath 8. Thus, sheet glass having ≤1mm thickness is manufactured.
