Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a good thin plate glass in high yield, by dividing the upper space of a molten metallic bath with a weir member and a heat insulating member into two, and providing a heating means in the upstream space and a cooling means in the downstream space.
CONSTITUTION: A molten glass 1 is fed to a molten metallic bath 4 while controlling the amount thereof with tweels 2. The upper space of the molten metallic bath 4 is divided into an upstream space 16 and a downstream space 17 by a heat insulating wall 13, an assistant heat insulating wall 14 and a weir member 10. A heating means 16' is provided in the upstream space 16 isolatedly from a molten glass pool 11 to prevent the temperature drop of the molten glass pool 11. The molten glass 1 is then passed through the space between the weir member 10 and the molten metal 8 and spread. On the other hand, a cooling means 17' is provided in the downstream space 17 to cool a glass ribbon 32 by a nonoxidizing atmosphere. Thus, the occurrence of streaks and foams is inhibited to prepare a plate glass having a thickness ≤ about 1mm.
