Abstract

PURPOSE:To heighten the accuracy of a magnetic scale while not disturbing the order of magnetizing direction thereof by joining magnetic scale unit with the magnetizing sections opposite in the magnetizing direction at both ends thereof to form a magnetic scale of a long rule. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic scale unit 10 has a magnetic recording medium layer 11 of a ferromagnetic material formed at a thickness of about 1mm. on a substrate 12 of a high magnetic permeability material. Coils 23 are separately wound on projections 2 on a comb-shaped core 21 of a magnetization device 20. Adjacent coils 23 are opposite to each other in the winding direction. When current flows through the coils 23, a magnetizing section 13 magnetized vertically is formed at the position corresponding to the projections 22. Then, the units 10 are bonded lengthwise in plurality on a rod-shaped substrate to form a magnetic scale of a long rule.
