Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium with excellent wear resistance and durability, by providing a ferromagnetic metallic thin film layer made of a metal or alloy on a base and forming a boron (B) thin film nitrided for a part or all on the layer as a protective layer. CONSTITUTION:A base 10 such as a polyester base film vacuum-deposited with a metal such as Co and Ni or a ferromagnetic alloy such as Co-Ni-P is set to a base 2 in a vacuum tank 1 with a magnetic substance layer faced to a lower side. Gaseous N2 is introduced from an introducing pipe 8, boron 6 in a hearth 3 is heated with a thermal electron source 9 to generate boron vapor, and a BN layer is formed in 300-500Angstrom thickness on a magnetic layer by a high frequency coil 4 and its electrode 5 through ion plating. Or after forming the boron thin film in 100-500Angstrom thickness on the magnetic layer, N ions are injected to a B layer to form the surface layer of BN of 30-500Angstrom thickness. Thus, the BN layer is formed as a protective layer to obtain a magnetic recording medium with less friction coefficient, long still life and longer life.
