Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure hot strength with high accuracy of a refractory test piece that has even large deformation during heating by accommodating the refractory test piece mounted on a supporting base in a sheath having an opening that opens upwards and filling the gaps in the sheath with graphite powder. CONSTITUTION:A test piece supporting base 2 is installed in a sheath 1 which has an opening that opens upwards and a refractory test piece 3 is placed on the base 2. In the gaps in the sheath 1 graphite powder 6 is packed up to a level over the top of the test piece 3. This sheath is charged into a hot strength testing machine, and after it is heated to a specified temperature and held, the test piece 3 is pressed by a pressing rod 5 to measure hot strength in reducing atmosphere. With this arrangement a material that largely deforms can be tested with high accuracy, because the enough reducing atmosphere can be maintained in the sheath by graphite and graphite powder causes no resistance to the testing procedure because it slips during pressing.
