1337036 Measuring heat flow electrically OFFICE NATIONAL D'ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES AEROSPATIALES 14 Dec 1971 [18 Dec 1970] 58054/71 Heading G1N [Also in Division H1] Apparatus for measuring the heat extraction coefficient s of a solid body (s = ##c#; # is thermal conductivity, c is specific heat and e is specific gravity) comprises a central mass 201 of metal, a peripheral mass of metal 203, enclosing the central mass and rigidly connected to it by a layer of thermal insulation 205, an electrical resistance heater 206 embedded in an epoxy resin shield 207, a thermocouple 209 for monitoring the temperature of the central mass, and a metal screw 210 acting with the metal of the masses and with leads 211, 212 to form a thermocouple for monitoring the temperature difference between the masses. The apparatus is arranged on a pneumatic jack 301-305 and an automatic control circuit acts to heat the two masses to a predetermined temperature, whereupon the jack is actuated to urge the masses into contact with a surface of a body of which the co-efficient s is to be measured. The temperature of the central mass 201 is then recorded as it cools and the temperature curve obtained may be used to determine s.
