Abstract

1433803 Measuring surface fouling electrically U O P Inc 18 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 18618/73 Heading G1N Apparatus for measuring fouling comprises a test specimen defining a resistive probe 3 of which the electrical resistance is temperature dependent; a constant current source 1; a current sensor 22 and voltage sensor 47. The voltage signal at sensor 47, variations of which represent changes in probe heat transfer coefficient, is compensated for changes in resistance of the probe due to temperature changes of probe environment. The compensation is effected by means of a thermocouple 29 having a junction 2 near the probe, alternatively a thermistor and voltage source may be used. In an alternative embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown) the probe is supplied with a constant voltage and current variations are measured, the variations being temperature compensated as before. The probe heat transfer coefficient is determined from the relation K =VI<SP>2</SP>α 2 Re/(V-IRe)F where V, I are probe voltage, current, Re is probe resistance of reference temperature Te, α 2 is probe temperature coefficient of resistivity at Te and F is surface area of the probe.
