Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable high-rate discharge of a water-activated battery, which includes a positive electrode made of silver peroxide and a negative electrode made of lithium by making a lithium hydroxide layer to be held by the negative electrode, and thereby increasing the utilization rate of lithium. CONSTITUTION:A battery contains a bipolar electrode or the like, which consists of a positive electrode 2 made of silver peroxide and a negative electrode 3 made of lithium, and water or sea water 6 used as an electrolyte. The battery is started by pouring the electrolyte 6 at the starting point. A lithium hydroxide layer 4 is made to be held by the negative electrode 3. It is preferable that the layer 4 is made of a pulverized powder of below 200 mesh so as to make the layer 4 to dissolve on contacting with water or sea water, and that the layer 4 is held by a porous material such as glass fiber or plastic fiber. The layer 4 preferably is separated with a porous membrane 5. The amount of the former lithium hydroxide is adjusted so that the concentration of lithium hydroxide contained in the water or sea water 6 is around 4mol/l. Owing to the above constitution, any side reaction between lithium and water is suppressed during the time when battery reaction proceeds. Consequently, the utilization rate of the former lithium is improved, and high-rate discharge is enabled.
