Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain silicon nitride whisker by mixing powder of " Shirasu " (pumiceous sand) with silicon powder in a specified wt. ratio, granulating the mixture, heating the granules to a specified temp. in a flow of gaseous nitrogen in the presence of a CO feeding source, and collecting the resulting fibrous substance.
CONSTITUTION: Purified Shirasu powder freed of iron simply is mixed with silicon powder in an amount corresponding to 1W2mol per one mole SiO2 contained in the Shirasu. To the mixture are added a binder such as starch or polyvinyl alcohol which is used as a CO feeding source in the next heating process and water, and they are formed into granules having 0.5W2mm grain size. The granules are charged into the lower part of a vessel 3 made of graphite, and they are heated to 1,400W 1,800°C through a furnace core tube 1 and a uniformly heating pipe 2 while introducing gaseous nitrogen from a pipe 5. The binder is decomposed to generate CO, and white fibrous silicon nitride whisker is formed on the upper ceiling and side wall of the vessel 3.
