PURPOSE:To achieve high-precision focusing detection all the time with regard to a low-contrast object, by correcting characteristic variance among photoelectric converting circuits. CONSTITUTION:A means 31 of cutting off light incident to a photodetector 2 selectively and a means 32 of lighting the photodetector 2 selectively and uniformly are provided between an optical system 1 and the photodetector 2, and corrected value memories 33 and 34 are provided in parallel to a digital memory 4. Then, when the incident light is cut off, photoelectric outputs are converted by an A/D converter 3 and stored in the memory 33 as dark value data. Further, photoelectric outputs in a lighting state are stored in the memory 34 as light value data. On the basis of those stored data, a digigal signal which corresponds to the light intensity distribution of an object image stored in the memory 4 is corrected to detect the focusing state of the object image.
