Abstract

PURPOSE:To extend the range of possibility of focus detection, by using a different appreciation method to discriminate the focus when the appreciation function based on a based on a fundamental appreciation method is lower than a prescribed level. CONSTITUTION:An object 1 is projected as an optical image onto a photodetector array 3 by a focusing lens 2, and respective outputs of photodetectors are subjected to A/D conversion in parallel in a circuit 4 to operate a fundamental appreciation function in a central processing device 5. When the operation result is lower than a prescribed threshold, a memory selecting circuit 30 is controlled by the device 5, and the selective read mode of a digital memory in the A/D converting circuit 4 is changed to switch the appreciation method to a different appreciation method. The lens 2 is moved by an optical system driving device 8, and the focusing state is displayed on a display device 7.
