CONSTITUTION:A detection pattern 4 is projected to an image pickup devices 7 and 9 through a lens 5. In this case, the device 7 is in focus and the device 9 is out of focus, respectively. Then the signal supplied from the device 9 is amplified to be used as a threshold signal 13, and the signal 13 is compared with a signal 12 of the device 7 after receiving an amplification 8 through a comparator 11 to obtain a binary-coded output. In such way, the pattern information itself contributes to the decision of the threshold value of binary coding. Thus an accurate binary coding is possible with a high resistance to the shading, uneven illumination, etc.
