Abstract

PURPOSE: To facilitate the machining of steel and to enable the simultaneous hardening of the surface and interior of steel due to the nitriding treatment of it, by determining the composition of the steel so as to impact the susceptibility for nitriding by Cr, the wear resistance by the nitride and carbide being uniformly dispersed in it and the precipitation hardening properties by Cu to the steel.
CONSTITUTION: The precipitation hardening type wear resistant steel for nitriding comprising 0.3W0.9wt% C, 1.5wt% or less Si, 1.5wt% or less Mn, 3.5W12wt% Cr, 0.7W3wt% Cu, 0.20wt% or less S and the remainder of Fe and impurities. The content of C need be more than the lower limit of it so that it imparts wear resistance to the steel, but when the content of it is more than the upper limit of it, it interferes with the effect of nitriding and deteriorates the machinability of the steel. Excessive Si deteriorates the workability. Excessive Mn results in brittleness of the steel, and S forms MnS to increase the machinability but excessive S deteriorates the corrosion resistance. Cr in an amount of more than its upper limit deteriorates the machinability of the steel, and excessive Cu exceeding its upper limit deteriorates markedly the hot workability.
