Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the low temp. cracking after hot working quickly and surely through simple operation by cooling a martensitic stainless steel under specific conditions from high temp. and reheating the same then cooling it down to ordinary temp. thereby softening the steel. CONSTITUTION:A martensitic stainless steel is cooled from the high temp. state after hot working down to the temp. region wherein the upper limit is Ms point + 100 deg.C and the lower limit is the higher of Mf point or 100 deg.C, at the cooling rates at which it is not cooled down to the nose of the pearlite transformation. Thence, it is reheated to the temp. below the Ac1 point and is held at this temp. for >=1min to temper the transformed martensite or the residual austenite is converted to pearlite, whereby the residual austenite is converted to low carbon. Next, the steel is cooled down to ordinary temp. so that the transformed martensite of high Ms point is softened by self-tempering. By this method, low temp. cracking is suppressed and the products of the martensitic stainless steel are mass-produced in good yields.
