Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve melting speed and to add a crystal grain refining agent effectively to molten metal by heating a rodlike refining agent just prior to its addition to the molten metal in adding said agent to the molten metal. CONSTITUTION:The molten metal M in a heat insulating furnace 1 is supplied through a spout 2 into a mold 3 for casting. A rod 3 of a crystal grain refining agent which is to be added to the molten metal M just before it is supplied to a mold 3 and is drawn out from a coil 6 is delivered at a prescribed feed speed with feed rolls 7, after which it is heated with a heater 8 and is introduced immediately into the molten metal M. Hence, the melting speed in the molten metal M is considerably improved, and the dislocation of the unmolten rod is eliminated, whereby the generation of product defects is prevented.
