Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the friction loss caused by the viscosity of fluid and heighten the fuel efficiency, by connecting the exhaust passage and fluid chamber of an internal combustion engine to each other through a heat pipe so that the passage and the chamber can optionally be disconnected from each other and by utilizing the energy of the exhaust gas to control the temperature of lubricating oil or cooling water. CONSTITUTION:In an internal combustion engine 1, an exhaust pipe 5 is connected to an exhaust manifolf 2 and fluid chambers such as an oil cooler 6 and an oil sump 3 are provided. The exhaust passages 2, 5 and the fluid chambers 6, 3 are connected to each other through a heat pipe 4 so that the passages and the chambers can optionally be disconnected from each other. A fluid temperature controller 8 is installed halfway on the heat pipe 4. The halfway part of the pipe 4 is coated with a heat insulator 7 and provided with a valve 10, which can be closed to divide the pipe 4 into two sections. The controller 8 functions to keep the temperature of cooling water or lubricating oil at about 80 to 100 deg.C to reduce fuel consumption.
