Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent a head and a medium from breaking down by coating the surface of a continuous thin film type magnetic recording medium layer with an antistatic agent made of a surface active agent. CONSTITUTION:On a recording medium formed of a base material layer 2 formed on a substrate 1, a metallic magnetic medium layer 3 covering the layer 2, and a protective film 4 further coated on it, an antistatic agent layer 5 is provided. In another way, the antistatic agent layer 5 is formed over a ferrite layer coated on the substrate 1 having an ''Alumite '' coating. The antistatic agent uses metal having wear resistance, e.g. Rh and Cr in addition to an organic compound consisting essentially of a surface active agent. The organic compound uses an anionic, cationic, amphoteric, or nonionic material, and the antistatic agent layer is formed by coating or sputtering. Thus, trouble due to the operation of a contact-stop-start system and a noise due to discharge are prevented.
