Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the carbon content of carbon-contg. metallic powder made essentially of difficultly oxidizable element and obtd. by an oil atomizing method to the amount required in an end product by treating the powder in an atmosphere consisting of H2O and H2 under specified conditions to accelerate the decarburization reaction. CONSTITUTION:Metallic powder made essentially of difficultly oxidizable element such as Mo, Ni, Cu, Co, Fe, P or W, having 0.1wt% carbon content, and obtd. by an oil atomizing method is decarburized in an atmosphere consisting of H2O and H2 at 500-1,000 deg.C atmospheric temp. (t) under conditions satisfying the equation (where PH2O is the partial pressure of steam, and PH2 is the partial pressure of hydrogen). By this method the decarburization reaction can be accelerated while preventing an ill effect due to the sticking of the particles of the powder to each other, and the carbon content can be reduced to <=0.1% in a short time.
