Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain hydrogen for fuel simply and inexpensively by thermally decomposing water with a metal to produce hydrogen and reducing the by-product metallic oxide to the original metal using CO obtd. in a process for producing hydrogen by the reaction of carbon with water.
CONSTITUTION: Carbon such as coke or charcoal is reacted with water at ≥ about 750°C in the 1st reaction region 1 according to equation I, and the resulting hydrogen and CO are introduced into the 2nd reaction region 2. In the region 2 a metal such as iron or a lower metallic oxide such as FeO is reacted with water at about 150W550°C to produce hydrogen according to equation II (where M is the metal), and the hydrogen is led out of the reaction system together with the hydrogen produced in the region 1. The by-product metallic oxide or higher metallic oxide in the region 2 is reduced to the original metal or lower metallic oxide by the reaction of equation II using CO produced in the region 1, and it is reacted again with water at an elevated temp.
