Abstract
PURPOSE: To simply obtain hydrogen for fuel by thermally decomposing water with a metal to produce hydrogen and reducing the by-product metallic oxide to the original metal using CO obtd. in a process for producing hydrogen by the reaction of carbon with steam.
CONSTITUTION: By a water feeding means 1, 1mol fine carbon particles are mixed with 2mol water. The mixture is reacted at ≥750°C in the 1st reaction region 2 according to equation I, and excess water and the reaction products are introduced into the 2nd reaction region 3. In the region 3 a metal such as iron or a lower metallic oxide is reacted with hot steam introduced from the region 2 at about 150W 550°C to generate hydrogen according to equation II (where M is the metal), and the hydrogen is led out of the reaction system together with the hydrogen produced in the region 2. The by-product metallic oxide in the region 3 is reduced to the original metal by the reaction of equation II using CO from the region 2, and it is reacted with water again.
