Abstract

Composn according to 768140, comprising an alloying ingredient contg. at least 1.0% elemental Si, and of size 4.76 mm, the ingredient being mixed in adherent contact with sufficient solid oxidant to transform at least a principal portion of the Si into silica. The ingredient should be composed of less readily oxidized than Si; e.g. ferrophosphorus Fe/Ni, Fe/Cr, Fe/Mn or Cu/Ni. The oxidant may be a phosphate, e.g. Ca(H2 PO4)2. The composition may be a single shaped piece. The alloying ingredient has elevated silicon content but in a form which will not excessively increase the Si content of the steel to which it is to be added.
