An agent for treating Fe-C alloys comprises: Ca 6 - 30% Mg 0À2 - 10% Rare Earth Metals 0À1 - 12% Si 51 - 66% Ba 0 - 12% Ti 0 - 12% Rb 0 - 10% Sc 0 - 10% Sr 0 - 12% and Y 0 - 10% any balance, apart from impurities and incidental elements, such as 2% Al, being Fe. The agent may be in the form of a mechanical mixture of the ingredients or preferably, of an alloy, and their use with cast iron or steel is disclosed.
