Abstract
PURPOSE:To use an optical fiber for an optical switch, etc., by varying the quantity of light transferred when the optical fiber is bent, by providing the internal wall part of the optical fiber at a prescribed part with the property of absorbing or scattering light. CONSTITUTION:The internal wall of an optical fiber is provided with a light absorbing part 3 or light scattering part at a prescribed position. When light passes through the optical fiber, a beam like a beam 4 parallel to the internal wall is all transmitted before the optical fiber is bent, a beam 5 incident at some angle is absorbed by the light absorbing part 3, and a beam 6 incident at a small angle is transmitted while avoiding the light absorbing part 3. When the circumference of the light absorbing part 3 is bent, the light beams 4, 5 and 6 are all absorbed by the light absorbing part 3 and not transmitted. For this light absorbing part 3, a mixture of a material having optical refractivity close to that of a core part 1 and light absorbing pigment is used. Measuring the attenuation of light by using this optical fiber enables the measurement of the curvature, etc., of a rail.
