Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable the connection loss of optical fibers and near-end measurement to be readily performed non-destructively by radiating the connection part and its vicinity of optical fibers and measuring the intensity distribution of the scattering light thereof in the axial direction of the optical fibers.
CONSTITUTION: The optical fiber 1 whose outside dimaeters and in-fiber refractive index distribution have become irregular owing to the connection part 2 such as by fusion connecting method or the like is fixed at a fixing base 11 and is moved at a constant speed by a moving device 12. This is the apparatus of providing optical fibers 13 and 14 on the same axis perpendicularly intersecting with this optical fiber 1 within the same plane, radiating the light from an LED light source 15 to the optical fiber 1 and directing the scattering light thereof to a photo sensor 16. As the fiber 1 moves in the axial direction, the intensity of scattering light changes and it turns out that as the change thereof is larger the connection loss at the connection point 2 and its vicinity is larger. Hence, by measuring the intensity distribution of this scattering light, the connection loss may be obtained.
