Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the titled polymer excellent in water permeability, uptake efficiency, retention of permeating water and chemical resistance, by sulfonating a porous membrane comprising an inorganic fine powder and a polyolefin resin with anhydrous sulfuric acid and then extracting the inorganic fine powder.
CONSTITUTION: A porous membrane comprising a polyolefin resin and an inorganic fine powder, average particle size 0.005W0.5μ, specific surface area 50W 500m2/g (e.g., fine silicic acid powder) is submerged in anhydrous sulfuric acid containing 1W30wt% free SO3, sulfonated at 60°C or below for 1minW3hr, washed with water, and submerged in an aqueous alkali (e.g., NaOH) solution to extract the inorganic fine powder at a temperature at least 10°C below the m.p. of the polyolefin resin. In this way, there is obtained a porous membrane whose pore surfaces and extermal surfaces are sulfonated, which contains 0.05W1meq/g (exchange eq) sulfonic groups and which has a porosity of 30W85% and an average pore diameter of 0.05W1μ.
