Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a porous membrane, usable for separation technologies, e.g. desalination of brine, having improved selective permeability, by immersing a cast film comprising a vinylidene fluoride resin, a solvent, and a surfactant, in a non- aqueous solvent to remove the solvent and surfactant.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A cast film comprising (a) a vinylidene fluoride resin, e.g. vinylidene fluroide homopolymer or vinylidene fluoride-tetrafluoroethylene copolymer, (b) its solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide, and (c) a surfactant is immersed in (B) a non-solvent of the resin, e.g. water or methanol, to give to porous vinylidene fluoride film free from (b) and (c). Any type of surfactant, e.g. the nonionic type, preferably soluble in the solvent of polyvinylidene fluoride, and stable at high temperatures, may be used as (c).
