Abstract

PURPOSE: A sintered porous material, prepared by sulfonating a sintered porous material consisting of a polyolefin resin, having improved hydrophilic nature, retained mechanical characteristics, and suitable to a foaming material used in an air diffusing pipe for water or an aqueous solution or a filter medium.
CONSTITUTION: A sintered porous material, consisting of a polyolefin resin, and having a porosity of 20W60% is sulfonated to introduce sulfone groups in an amount to give an exchange capacity of 0.05W1meq/g into the material. For use not requiring the ion exchange function, the sulfone groups are preferably converted into usually the sulfonate salt type (-SO3M; M is Na, K, Ca, Mg, NH4, Li, etc.). The resultant material is usable as a microfilter for the separation of microbial cells, blood, etc.
