PURPOSE: To enhance the toughness of the weld zone of the resulting titled steel in the temp. range of LPG by providing a specified composition contg. C, Si, Mn, sol. Al and Ti as well as P, S and N in amounts reduced to the utmost.
CONSTITUTION: This Al killed steel for low temp. use suitable for high heat input welding consists of 0.03W0.12% C, 0.01W0.5% Si, 0.7W1.7% Mn, ≤0.025% P, ≤0.10% S, 0.040W0.080% sol. Al, 0.001W0.010% Ti, ≤0.0040%total N and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities while holding the relation represented by the equation. The steel may further contain one or more among ≤0.50% Cu, ≤1.5% Ni, ≤1.0% Cr and ≤0.5% Mo. When this steel is welded with ≤KJ/cm heat input per single layer, the structure of the weld heat-affected zone is composed of proeutectoid ferrite and a transitional structure to provide superior toughness at low temp.
