Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the pressure fluctuations of intake air and thereby to assure safe engine operations by providing a one-way valve such as a reed valve downstream of a compressor on an intake air passage to prevent the reversal of the flow of intake air in said intake air passage. CONSTITUTION:In a supercharged internal combustion engine in which a compressor C is installed in an intake air passage 9 leading to an intake port 5 to compress the intake air flowing therein, a one-way valve such as a reed valve 22 is installed in the passage 9 downstream of the compressor C to prevent the reversal of the intake air flowing in said passage 9. While the engine is in operation, the intake air downstream of the valve 22 is prevented from being reversed. Hence the intake air pressure downstream of the valve 22 undergoes no sudden change even if there occurs pressure change upstream of the valve 22 due to causes such as the surging of the compressor C and this assures stable operation of the internal combustion engine. And even when pressure pulsations occur downstream of the valve 22 due to the opening and closing operations of the intake valve 7, the compressor C is less affected thereby.
