Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an inoculant having the effect of suppressing strongly the formation of the chill layer near the black skin surface of lead-contg. cast iron by mixing Mg, and Mischmetal to ordinary inoculants of Fe-Si type, graphite type, Ca-Si type, etc.
CONSTITUTION: An inoculant wherein 2W5% Mg and/or 5W50% Mischmetal by weight are contained in ordinary inoculants such as Fe-Si type, graphite type, Ca - Si type, Fe-Al type inoculants. Here, the Mg is usually an additive component for the purpose of formation of spheroidal graphite, and if it is large in amt., graphite spheroidization is accelerated and therefore it is added in the above- described range. The Mg and the Mischmetal can be added to ordinary inoculants respectively independently or simultaneously. Unless the lead-contg. cast iron to be added with this inoculant is of low content of S, the effect of preventing chilling does not appear distinctly. The inoculation with this inoculant is accomplished by charging beforehand a prescribed amt. of the inoculant, for example, to the bottom of a ladle, and putting molten metal in the ladle.
