Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the suitability to cold forging of carbon steel or various kinds of low alloy steel without deteriorating the machinability by adding Te and S to the steel in a specified ratio and restricting the Al content to a low value.
CONSTITUTION: Steel contg. <0.6% C, <0.5% Si, <2% Mn, 0.003W0.04% S, <0.03% Te (%Te/%S>4), <0.01% Al, <0.02% N and <0.003% O is refined, and the molten steel is vacuum degassed, poured into a ladle fitted with a porous plug, and agitated by blowing an inert gas such as Ar. The steel may contain specified amount of one or more among Ni, Cr and Mo, specified amount of one or more among V, Nb, Ti, B and Zr, specified amount of one or more among Pb, Se, Bi and Ca, or mixture thereof. By the agitation nonmetallic macro-inclusions in the molten steel are floated up to the steel surface and captured in the molten slag. The predetermined amoung of Te is added and uniformly dispersed optionally together with Pb, Bi and Ca to enhance the machinability of the steel.
