Abstract
Spheroidal graphite cast iron is produced by contacting a spheroidizing alloy e.g. containing up to 15% Mg in lumpy form, preferably as briquettes containing the alloy with FeSi and binder, on a ladle floor with a quantity of crystallizing liquid iron melt insufficient for completely covering the alloy, and then pouring the rest of the iron melt at a higher temperature e.g. 1490 or 1500 DEG C. over the alloy anchored in the solidified melt. The spheroidizing alloy may be introduced into a quantity of crystallizing liquid meltpreviously poured into the ladle, preferably in a recess in the ladle floor, or the alloy may be first placed into the ladle, or recess, and the crystallizing liquid melt poured over. The nodularized iron melt may be subsequently inoculated with FeSi e.g. at 1420 or 1400 DEG C. Examples of nodularizing alloys are (1) 84% Ni, 15% Mg and 1% misch metal; and (2) 10% Mg, 1-4% Ca, 0.8% misch metal, 35% Fe and remainder Si. The inoculated cast iron may contain 3.8% C, 0.3% Mn, 0.035% P, 0.01% S, 1.5-2.8% Si, 0.2-1% Ni and 0.058-0.064% Mg.
