Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the strength of a thick casting of low alloy gray cast iron by casting molten cast iron having a relatively high carbon equivalent value and contg. a specified amt. of Cr and Cu or Mo by an inoculation method in a mold. CONSTITUTION:Molten low alloy cast iron having carbon equivalent; 3.5-4.1 and contg. Cr; 0.2-0.5% and Cu or Mo; 0.2-0.5% is poured into a mold to cast a thick casting. At this time, an inoculant is previously attached to the inside of the mold, and the molten iron is inoculated in the mold to prevent the inoculation effect from fading. The inoculant includes low oxygen Fe-Si or Fe-Si contg. a little Mg, and higher alcohol is used as the binder. The thick low alloy gray casting has high carbon equivalent preventing occurence of gas defects in the casting due to moisture, and the casting contains alloy elements and has high strength above 30 kg/mm<2> resulting from assured inoculation.
