Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain vermicular cast iron having stable vermicular graphite structure by adding a mixture of calcium silicide and fluoride of rare earth metals to molten metal of desulfurized cast iron.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture consisting of 0.10W1.0wt% calcium silicide and 0.05W 0.50% fluoride of rare earch metals is added to molten metal of desulfurized cast iron. Thereby, vermicular cast iron of a low content of spheroidal graphite contg. no free cementite and flake graphite at all is obtained irrespectively of the difference in wall thickness as far as the wall thickness is not below about 3mm. Out of the chemical components of this cast iron, the contents of the following components are regulated to 1.5W2.0% Si, 0.50W0.70% Mn, 0.20W1.0% Cu, 0.020W0.10% Sn, and the ratio of pearlite occupied in the base structure is increased, whereby mechanical properties such as hardness, yield strength, tensile strength and abrasion resistance are improved.
