PURPOSE:To make it possible to lower a maximum attainable temperature of heat pipes of a water heater that utilizes solar heat thereby improving the druability thereof, by sealing into the heat pipes a working liquid in a quantity up to a prescribed weight with respect to a boiling temperature of a liquid to be heated. CONSTITUTION:A water heater utilizing the solar heat comprises a heat collector 1 and a hot water reservoir 2, heat collecting sections 5a of heat pipes 5... are mounted to a heat collecting plate 4 housed in the heat collector 1, and radiating sections 5b of the heat pipes 5 project via a partition 10 into the hot water reservoir 2. In said water heater, a working liquid is sealed into the heat pipes 5 in an amount up to a limit weight given by the following equation: G= (V/v)X10<-3>(g) wherein G(g) stands for a limit weight of a working liquid, V (cm<3>) stands for a total inner volume of the heat pipes 5, and v(m<3>/kg) stands for the specific volume of vapor of the working liquid at the boiling temperature of the liquid to be heated such as water. According to the arrangement, the maximum attainable temperature of the heat pipe 5 can be retained up to the boiling temperature of the liquid to be heated thereby the life of the hot water reservoir 2 will be prolonged.
