Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain cured cement with high density, superior dimensional stability and superior strength by making use of magnesia having low impurity content and certain relation between the specific surface area and the heavy bulk density in heavy-duty packaging and showing low viscosity when slurrified.
CONSTITUTION: By making use of magnesia having ≥94% purity of MgO, cured magnesia cement with stable quality such as curing rate, strength and water resistance is obtd. When the magnesia has relation satisfying 4/(x-0.3)+15 ≥y≥0.40/(x-0.55)+0.25 if the specific surface area (m2/g) and the heavy bulk density (g/cm3) are represented by (y) and (x), respectively, and the magnesia shows ≤25cp viscosity when formed into a suspended slurry with 160g/l concn., cured magnesia cement with superior strength and superior water resistance is obtd. In order to manufacture magnesia with said characteristics, magnesium oxide as starting material is calcined at ≥1,400°C, treated with nitric acid, and neutralized, and the resulting magnesium hydroxide is light burned at l,000W 1,500°C.
