CONSTITUTION: By making use of magnesia having ≥94% purity of MgO, cured magnesia cement with stable quality such as curing rate, strength and water resistance is obtd. When the magnesia has relation satisfying 4/(x-0.3)+15 ≥y≥0.40/(x-0.55)+0.25 if the specific surface area (m2/g) and the heavy bulk density (g/cm3) are represented by (y) and (x), respectively, and the magnesia shows ≤25cp viscosity when formed into a suspended slurry with 160g/l concn., cured magnesia cement with superior strength and superior water resistance is obtd. In order to manufacture magnesia with said characteristics, magnesium oxide as starting material is calcined at ≥1,400°C, treated with nitric acid, and neutralized, and the resulting magnesium hydroxide is light burned at l,000W 1,500°C.
