Abstract
PURPOSE:To make it possible to manufacture a molten metal level gauge of high response speed and high precision by causing a light beam modulated by a specified frequency to reflect at the surface of molten metal and by measuring the phase difference between the modulated light beam and the reflected light beam. CONSTITUTION:A light beam from a light beam generating source is modulated by a specified frequency and guided to the surface of molten metal to reflect, and it is photoelectrically converted and phase difference between the modulated and reflected light beams is detected and the level of molten metal is measured. For example, a light beam from a laser beam generator 21 is modulated by a KDP modulation cell 22 connected to a modulation oscillator 31 and guided to molten metal 4 through reflecting mirrors 23, 24 and an objective reflecting mirror 11 in an optical guide 1. Next, its reflected light beam is received by a photoelectric conversion element 26 through a lens 25 and its signal is guided to a phase difference meter 33 through an amplifier 32 and its phase is compared with the phase of the light beam from said modulation oscillator, and the distance to molten metal is measured by an operation circuit 34.
